"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." —Mark Twain
Albuquerque is home to a plethora of activities for those with diverse interests and lifestyles. If you are new to the area, these three Albuquerque entertainment staples are a must see. For all you locals out there, go see them anyway, perhaps you’ll discover something new about the place you call home.
Family Fun—Rio Grande Zoo
It’s hard to imagine polar bears in the Southwest, but the Rio Grande Zoo has them. The zoo, founded in 1927 also houses sea lions, seals, gorillas, kuala bears, tropical birds, a hippopotamus and a variety of special exhibits including Africa, Tropical America, Gator Swamp and the Thunderbird Express — a train that takes visitors through a tour of the zoo.
The summer months offer the zoo music concert series where visitors can enjoy regional, national and international music in the zoo’s unique environment. Separate ticket charges apply. Zoo admission runs $7/adults, $3/3-12 & 65+. Info: Rio Grande Zoo, 903 Tenth St. SW. (505) 764-6200. (www.cabq.gov/biopark/zoo/).
Sophisticated Fare—Gruet Winery
The Gruet family came to the Southwest in 1983 from the Champagne region of France. They were stunned to learn that New Mexico made for good grape growing country. The Gruets since have produced sparkling wine that easily stands up to Napa Valley counterparts.
The Gruet tasting room is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tours of the facilities are available everyday at 2 p.m. Info: Gruet Winery, 8400-A Pan American Freeway NE. (505) 821-0055. www.gruetwinery.com. Advice: Check out the Gruet Steak House and the Gruet Grille for an evening of fine dining and of course, great wine!
